Day 6: Margaret River

Today was a relaxing winery and beer brewery day! I learned that grape vines take about 15yrs to mature for wine making harvest. 15yrs! Good lord, I could barely wait 5 days to eat my freshly planted herbs at home. I also learned new wine lexicons like 'leggy' and started to learn the different nuances in tastes.

New Aussie term: 'Skipper' --> Driver haha.

But before the day began, I walked down to the beach for the sunrise. Just simply gorgeous. God's hand of creation is just truly spectacular.

(Leggy... Haha)

We also had a hearty brekkie at Bunker Bay Cafe...

And almost got blown into the ocean at the Canal Rocks.

Off to see the whales in Augusta tomorrow!

Day 5: Perth to Dunsborough

Sorry for the delayed posts. Our resort here is pretty remote and doesn't have Internet... We're in Dunsborough now, a small quaint town at the western-most tip of Australia known for whales, caves, and wineries.

We flew into Perth on the 6:10AM flight...

And drove our weetle weetle Hyundai...

From Perth to Dunsborough...

Using maps of all kinds...

Drove on the Tonkin Hwy...

And stopped in Mandura for brunch along the way.

Here we established the 'you snooze, you lose' rule:

And tried vegemite, which tastes like a saltier / nastier version of the black paste you put on those raw onions at jjajjang myun restaurants. Not yummy.

Once we got into Dunsborough, we hit the grocery store to buy Asians...

I mean, a year's supply of milk...

And then checked into the hotel.

A long journey - but excited for the adventurous long weekend ahead!

Day 4: Exploring Melbourne

What a day! Since we'll be heading to Perth tomorrow, I decided to spend the day in and around Melbourne's downtown area today. With my 'unique' gifted sense of direction, I knew I would probably be doing a good amount of walking (and retracing) so, I layered up the best I could and headed out on my own.

(Kimch - I totally should've packed that down coat. My ass is freezing here!)

In roaming the city all day, I've made some interesting observations about Melbourne and the Melbournese:
- The city is so well organized and pleasant! No garbage on the street, no one bumping into you on the sidewalk, no offensive graffiti on the walls, it's like... Asia... But with lots of white people...
- No one speeds or honks. Literally the only time I heard someone honk all day was when I wasn't paying attention and almost crossed the street before the walkway sign said, "Walk".
- No one jaywalks. Ever. Doesn't matter that there are no cars whatsoever in sight. No one jaywalks, and that's that. (I had to beat that urge out of my NY self today).
- There is no dried up gum on the sidewalk. None. How they do it, no idea... But whatever they're doing, they should share their secrets with the NY sanitation dept.
- The toilet water flushes ... down. Sorry to disappoint, but I have yet to find a toilet that flushes anti-clockwise. I'm sorry, but their toilets just flush differently. There's no swirling ... Just goes ... Down. Haha. Whoever convinced the world of the whole Aussie toilet flushing thing was lying. At least as far as James and I are concerned. I'll be sure to let you know if it's any different in Perth.

I realize that my early observations are primarily focused on hygiene and public etiquette. Haha. But, I guess coming from NYC that's initially the most apparent difference.

Anyway, enough blabbing... Here are some pictures of today's highlights.

Flinders Street Station near Federation Square

Local bike shares! Like ZipCar... But bicycles. Would never work in NYC, but in a country where there's respect for public property, works great!

Lunch with James at Ramen Yu

Touristy trinkets at Queen Victoria Market

Carlton Gardens

Melbourne Museum

I walked over to the Parliament, but there wasn't much to see or snap. Imagine a big old ornate stately building with big columns and lots of steps. That about sums it up.

Dinner at Movida Next Door with James and Arlene

When we got home, I was so tired I was practically falling asleep while packing for our weekend Perth trip. BTW, there's no liquid limit fuss or taking off the shoes nonsense here. It was like boarding an Amtrak train. So painlessly easy. They don't even check your ID! Don't worry America, maybe one day we can be like this (again) too... ;)

Alright, see you in Perth!

I made it! And so did my luggage!

I guess all the flying for work over the years was good training for my journey over the Pacific these past two days. The flight wasn't as bad as I had braced myself for. It went by rather painlessly, actually. I had planned on taking some melatonin, which was a great idea in theory ... had I not packed them in my suitcase and checked my bag ... But that's ok - I slept just fine without it anyway :)

So, all i did for about 20 hours was eat and sleep, eat and sleep, eat and sleep - and it was GREAT. I don't know why people complain about airplane food, because c'mon, you're sitting/sleeping in a chair and with just a word like "chicken", you have a full plate of hot food complete with dessert and drink. You don't even have to do the dishes. Living like a king!!

Mileage count to-date: 11,000 miles
JFK --> L.A. ...

L.A. --> Sydney ...

Sydney --> Melbourne!

(Sorry, I missed the 'Welcome to Melbourne' sign...)

Then, once in Melbourne James and i grabbed a panini at a cafe on DeGraves Street and walked around the Central Business District.

Thanks, James for a wonderful kick off to my Aussie visit!
